Prof. I-Yun Lisa Hsieh brought the lab's research to a broad public audience with a column in The News Lens (關鍵評論網), one of Taiwan's leading digital media outlets: 「2030年電動車全面替代燃油車願景中,退役電池和車聯網都是「能源永續」的一環」 — arguing that in the vision of fully replacing fuel vehicles by 2030, retired batteries and connected vehicles are both pieces of the energy-sustainability puzzle.
The Argument
Published in July 2024, the column makes two connected cases:
- Give batteries a second life before recycling them. When an EV or e-scooter battery retires from the road, it typically still holds substantial capacity. Cascading these packs into stationary storage (梯次利用) — for homes, buildings, and industrial sites — extends their useful life, supports the grid during peak demand, and keeps households powered through outages, all before the materials head to recycling.
- Treat connected vehicles as grid assets. Through Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology, EV fleets can charge when demand is low and discharge support when the grid is stressed — turning millions of parked vehicles into a distributed energy resource rather than a pure load.
The column surveys international momentum — Norway's incentive-driven adoption, the EV100 corporate fleet-electrification initiative — and argues Taiwan should pair progressive subsidies with clear mandates while building the second-life ecosystem ahead of the retirement wave.
