Prof. Hsieh's paper receives the 2022 ES&T Best Paper Award.

We are honored to share that a paper by Prof. I-Yun Lisa Hsieh has received a 2022 Best Paper Award from Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T), the American Chemical Society's flagship environmental journal — named Second Joint Winner in the Policy Analysis category in the editors' awards announced in April 2024.

The Winning Paper

The recognized study, An Integrated Assessment of Emissions, Air Quality, and Public Health Impacts of China's Transition to Electric Vehicles (ES&T 2022, 56 (11), 6836–6846), was led by Prof. Hsieh with collaborators from MIT — Guillaume P. Chossière, Emre Gençer, Hao Chen, Steven Barrett, and William H. Green. Rather than stopping at tailpipe emissions, the paper chains vehicle-fleet modeling, power-sector scenarios, atmospheric chemistry, and health-impact assessment into one integrated framework — asking not just how much CO₂ China's EV transition saves, but who breathes cleaner air, and where. The work extends the research thread begun during Prof. Hsieh's doctoral years at MIT on the economics and impacts of the world's largest EV transition.

About the Award

Each year, the editors of ES&T review all papers published in the journal that year and select a small set representing the field's most vital and influential work, judged on quality, novelty, and impact on environmental science and engineering. In the 2022 Policy Analysis category, the paper shared the podium with the widely cited planetary-boundaries study on novel entities — company that speaks to the significance the editors saw in the work.
